My name is Erik Flothmann, I am based in Belgium/Sweden, and for over 30 years I have been developing my artistic skills alongside a professional career in telecommunications. I specialize in oil painting on canvas, creating works that range from photorealistic toward hyperrealistic, with a particular passion for animals and Arctic landscapes.

My Journey

What began as a hobby evolved over decades, from experimenting with drawing, acrylics, and watercolors, to discovering that oil painting was my true calling.

To refine my craft, I trained under Paul De Roy, a Belgian realist painter and master of traditional techniques. Paul’s guidance allowed me to deepen both my technical skills and my appreciation for the discipline and passion behind realist painting. Following his unexpected passing in 2018, I followed his footsteps and started teaching a community of dedicated artists. I expanded my knowledge of art techniques, history, and the creative processes of other painters.

Artistic Style

I work in a hyperrealistic style, rooted in the traditions of old-master craftsmanship. Every painting is approached with meticulous attention to detail, from texture and light to subtle effects that bring the subject to life. While my work often leans toward photorealism, it remains grounded in classic realism, combining technical precision with a deep appreciation for the timeless techniques of traditional oil painting.

Inspirations

Nature provides me with inspiration. I love to paint animals, with a special fascination for their eyes—the window to their character and spirit. I also find endless inspiration in Arctic landscapes, where light, texture, and atmosphere create striking and evocative scenes. Through my work, I aim to capture not just the appearance, but the essence and emotion of these subjects, translating the beauty of the natural world onto canvas.

Material

Painting is a demanding craft, and using the right materials is essential to bring my vision to life without compromise. I work on high-quality canvas, with most larger works mounted on durable aluminium frames to ensure they maintain their shape and beauty for generations.

For my paintings, I use a carefully selected combination of premium-quality oil paints from trusted brands. These materials allow me to achieve the depth, richness, and subtlety that hyperrealistic oil painting demands, ensuring each work stands the test of time.

Special thanks

Every one of my paintings begins with a great photograph. Animals, of course, cannot be asked to sit still and pose for twenty-four hours, so a good reference image is essential. Because I am not a photographer myself, I rely on the work of talented photographers who capture these moments.

A strong photograph is rarely just luck. It is the result of technical skill, insight, timing, and a great deal of patience. I am very grateful to the photographers who generously allow me to use their work as inspiration, making it possible to transform one art form into another.

I specially would like to mention the following photographers:
